Frequently Axed Questions
Q: Can I just come watch? – YES! If you are not ready to throw yet, AND if there is room at the bar, you can come and say hi, have a beer and just chill in our swanky space.
Q: What is ‘social axe throwing’? – Our trained axe-throwing instructors keep you safe and quickly teach you everything you need to know throw a hatchet or tomahawk. Once you are comfortable with one style axe, we can also show you other axe styles and other throwing styles. You’ll find one that you like and you’ll enjoy sinking into a target with some friends!
Q: Are appointments required? – We do take walk-ins; HOWEVER, we cannot guarantee we have space to accommodate you, especially on weekends. If you want to make sure you will get in at your ideal date and time, we strongly recommend making an appointment. You can make an appointment on our Bookings page. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DATE AND TIME! BOOK HERE.
Q: Do I need to wear anything specific? – CLOSED TOED SHOES! Nothing that might get caught on the axe, such as a prom dress, 10-gallon hat, or football shoulder pads.
Q: What if I’m late to my appointment? – Please do your best to be on time, ideally a few minutes before your appointment time. Since we have other bookings after you, we cannot allow you to keep throwing beyond your booked time. The later you are, the less time you’ll have to throw. You are welcome to hang out in our seating area before or after your appointment, but the targets are only yours during your booked hour.
Q. How can I join the World Axe Throwing League and compete in tournaments? – Come visit us and ask about the league! It is open to the public and currently accepting new members! Our league nights are Thursday and Sunday 7-9pm. Just show up during league time if you’re looking to join. No experience is necessary, but practice makes progress! Learn more about our league nights, league events and memberships here.
Q. What are your league times? – Our league times are Thursday & Sunday, 7-9pm every week.
Q: What is the difference between a public booking and a private event? – Public bookings are available Wed-Sun and can be booked yourself through our Booking page. You will have a certain number of targets based on your party size and you will be sharing the space with other public bookings. Private events either have the ENTIRE Pit reserved for just your party OR have our Mobile Unit come to your location. We can facilitate private events any day between 10am and 10pm. Private events are ideal for company events, weddings, or extra-special birthdays where you don’t want to share the space with others. Please email [email protected] or fill out the inquiry form on the Private Events page to set up a private event.
Q: Do you serve food? Can I bring food? – We do not have a kitchen, but we can order pizza for you through Portland Pie Co. You will need to let us know ahead of time that you’d like pizza for your appointment, which you can add to your order at the time of booking. We cannot fulfill orders when you arrive, as delivery takes about an hour. You may not bring food to public bookings. If you have a private event, we can facilitate catering from Moe’s BBQ or Portland Pie Co, or you’re welcome to bring your own food.
Q: How heavy are the axes? – Our axes generally range from 1/2 pound to 1-1/2 pounds. No, they are not very heavy. Most are about the same weight as your average hammer.
Q: How old do you have to be to throw an axe? – 18 years old or 13 years old with a parent or guardian present and their signature on our release form. We do not allow kids under 13 in our facility.
Q: Am I too old or too weak to throw an axe? – Nope! It’s all in your form, which our coaches show you how to do. It actually takes very little strength, the axe does a lot of the work for you! We have seen 80+ year olds stick a bullseye before, so there is no age limit.
Q: Can I bring my own axe?– Yes! BUT… Please present them to our staff upon arrival. They will need to be inspected for safety. We may tell you that your axe is not safe or it will be too damaging to our targets.
Q: What if I’m no good? (yes people ask this…) – That’s fine! We are all teachers here and LIVE to help you feel comfortable and improve the way you throw and most importantly have fun doing it! If axes are tough for you, we also have the Battle Box, which has other projectiles like ninja stars and throwing knives, which might be more your style.
Q: How many people can I bring? – ALL OF THEM! Yes! We now have a huge facility and can accommodate up to 72 people throwing axes at the same time!! We allow 6 people per target and up to 24 people for public bookings. You’ll see on our booking page that you can select the number of people you’d like to bring and how long you want to throw. If you’d like to bring 25 or more people, we can facilitate private events, where you get the entire Pit to yourself. Check out our Private Events page for more info on that!
Q: Is Axe Throwing Safe? – YES! A quick safety brief is mandatory for anyone who has not thrown before. And if you use the proper throwing technique shown to you by our trained staff, not only is axe throwing safe, but it’s also more fun because you’ll be sticking that target like a pro!
